Dr. Courtney Ngai, Ph.D.
Quantitative Research and Data Visualization Consultant
Dr. Ngai has expertise in studying how students identify and differentiate substances (chemical identity thinking). She has a Ph.D. in Chemistry with a concentration in Biological Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts Boston. She is author of seven research publications focused on chemistry education, and for this work she has collaborated with Boston Public School teachers as well as international researchers. She uses qualitative research methods and software to investigate students’ chemical thinking, and has designed surveys, interview protocols, and in-class exercises to uncover student thinking. More recently, Dr. Ngai has joined the Departmental Action Team project and facilitates teams as they work to improve undergraduate education in their department. As part of this work, she studies how change happens in higher education, and is investigating the mechanisms that drive and support positive and sustainable change.
